An optical fiber splitter is a device used to split and combine optical power. It distributes the optical energy carried by a single fiber into two or more fibers according to a predetermined ratio, or combines optical energy from multiple fibers into a single fiber. Based on their operating principles, optical splitters are classified into two types: fused‑biconic taper type and planar waveguide type. Fused‑biconic taper splitters are fabricated by laterally fusing two or more optical fibers; planar waveguide splitters are micro‑optical devices that employ photolithography to pattern waveguides on dielectric or semiconductor substrates, thereby achieving branching and splitting functions. The splitting mechanisms of these two types are similar: they achieve different splitting ratios by adjusting the evanescent field coupling between fibers—such as coupling strength and coupling length—and by varying the fiber core radius. Conversely, multiple optical signals can be combined into a single output, a process known as signal combining.
