Fiber optic splitters are devices used to split and combine optical wave energy. They distribute the optical energy transmitted through a single fiber to two or more fibers in a predetermined ratio, or combine the optical energy from multiple fibers into a single fiber. Fiber splitters can be classified into two types based on their principles: fused taper type and planar waveguide type. The fused taper type is made by side-fusing two or more fibers together; the planar waveguide type is a micro-optical component that uses photolithography to form optical waveguides on a dielectric or semiconductor substrate, achieving branching distribution functionality. The splitting principles of these two types are similar; they achieve different branch sizes by changing the evanescent field coupling (coupling degree, coupling length) between fibers and altering the fiber radius. Conversely, multiple optical signals can be combined into a single signal, known as a combiner. Fused taper fiber couplers have become the mainstream manufacturing technology in the market due to their simple production method, low cost, ease of connection with external fibers, and ability to withstand mechanical vibrations and temperature changes.
